Description of Project

In Nainital district MITR is implementing National AIDS Control Project (NACP) with the financial assistance of Health Department, Uttaranchal and National Aids Control Organization (NACO) with following objectives among High Risk Group (HRGs):


Goal : To halt and reverse the epidemic in India over the next five years


Specifically reducing new infections by

  • 60% in High Prevalence States
  • 40% in Vulnerable States

Objectives:

  • Prevention of new infections (saturation of HRG coverage and scale up of interventions for General population)
  • Increased proportion of PLHA receiving care, support and treatment
  • Strengthening capacities at district, state and national levels
  • Building Strategic information management systems

During Year 2004 to 2007: (3000 Truckers, 150 CSW)


During Year 2007 to 2009: (550 CSW, 60 MSM, 60 IDU)


During Year 2009 to 2010: (600 FSW)


During Year 2010 to 2011: (600 FSW & 200 MSM)


During Year 2011 to Till Date: (800 FSW)


Aim of the Project : Prevention of HIV infection among female sex workers


Objective of the Project:

  • To reduce the vulnerability of HIV infection among the FSWs through awareness generation.
  • To reduce STI/STD among targeted population.
  • To create an enabling environment to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on FSW.

DIC:


T.I Project has got a drop in center in the project office where HRGs come and take rest, play indoor games, perform dance and spend their time. They are given types of counseling according to their requirement in DIC.
DIC has facilitated HRGs to come together and share their feelings with each other.


Clinic:


STI clinic is one of the important part of T.I project. FSWs are treated in the STI Clinic and provided medicines with free of cost, after that they are referred to ICTC center for HIV testing, HRGs with STI problems are tested VDRL and treated for that.

Advocacy Meeting


Time to time advocacy meeting is conducted with the stake holder to sensitize the community regarding HIV/AIDS and to create an enabling environment for Female Sex Workers in the community. One of our peer educators Mrs. Nurjahan was not allowed by the landlord to stay at home as she was working for Female Sex Workers. Advocacy meeting was conducted with the help of few stake holder in that area and the problem was solved. Now Nurjahan PE is not facing any problem due to her work.


Peer Meetings


Every week peer educators meeting is conducted to collect the weekly data from peers and to make plan for next week. Here weak performance area comes to the front which is focused properly.


DIC Meetings / Hotspot Meeting


DIC Meeting and Hotspot meetings are conducted with FSWs to sensitize them regarding HIV/AIDS, STI/STD, Condom use and other issues related to the women. Time to time they are also motivated for positive attitude which can change their behavior.


Peer Meetings


Every week peer educators meeting is conducted to collect the weekly data from peers and to make plan for next week. Here weak performance area comes to the front which is focused properly.


Stake Holder Meetings


It is conducted to sensitize the community regarding HIV/AIDS and to bring Positive change within people toward Female Sex Workers.


Community Event


In the month of March community event was conducted where play on HIV/AIDS, cultural activities were performed by the HRGs. A total 315 HRGs had participated in the meeting to make it successful. People other than target group also had participated in the event and updated the knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS.


Hotspot / Condom outlet


In every hotspot condom outlets have been made to make availability of condoms always. Stakeholders are made from the area to take care of the condom outlets and its distribution.


Challenges:

  • Prevention of HIV infection among FSWs.
  • HIV testing of all the registered HRGs.
  • To bring positive attitude within community people towards Female Sex Workers.
